On October 20, 2014, an experimenter wore a sensor on his head and controlled a robot to drop items through EEG signals. This “brain-controlled robot” system was unveiled at Nankai University and was jointly developed by five undergraduate students from the school of computer and control engineering.
The brain-controlled robot experiment conducted by the cognitive science basic research and innovation team of the National University of Defense Technology: The human brain is connected to the system as a link, and the intelligence of the human brain is used to improve the intelligence level of the entire system.
The robot’s movements are not manually controlled by humans, but directly controlled by the human brain.
Brain control technology provides another system control method besides electrical systems and human hands. In the near future, disabled people will be able to use brain-controlled wheelchairs instead of walking on two feet. For many driving people, realizing brain-controlled driving will undoubtedly be a great blessing.
The system captures people’s EEG signals through sensors worn on the head, uses computers to analyze people’s intentions and sends action instructions to the robot, thereby achieving the purpose of the human brain controlling the robot. In real life, this system can provide convenience for modern family life and the daily life of lonely elderly people and disabled people.
The brainwave electrode cap can collect human brainwaves, amplify the weak brainwaves, and transmit them to the computer. It reads people’s thoughts from the brainwave signals generated when the human brain is working, collected in real time, and then converts the people’s thoughts into robot control instructions through a computer, and sends them to the robot through a wireless device. In this way, the robot can be controlled to complete actions such as moving forward, turning left and right, etc. just through the thoughts of the brain.
Brain control technology belongs to the research scope of cognitive science, and it is the part that is biased towards application. The purpose of cognitive science is to reveal the nature of brain intelligence, and related research has become the forefront of the current scientific community, especially the life science community. The 21st century is called “the century of life science and brain science” by many scientists. In the future battlefield, brain-controlled guns and brain-controlled vehicles will have important applications.
In recent years, brain science and cognitive science research have made breakthrough progress. Europe, the United States, and Japan have successively launched various human brain projects, and China will also launch its own brain science plan in an all-round way.
The “China Brain Project” has been approved by the State Council and listed as one of the “major science and technology projects related to my country’s future development”.
It will be launched from three directions: understanding the brain, protecting the brain and simulating the brain, and comprehensively promotes basic research and development of brain science. Apply research to seize the commanding heights of a new round of industrial revolution.
